After you review TestNav 8 requirements, you can use the next sections to set up your testing environment for both Browser-based TestNav and Installable TestNav.
Requirements and procedures differ based on the devices your organization uses for online testing, as well as the versions currently installed on these devices.
Browser-based TestNav versus Installable TestNav
During an online testing session, you can administer your online tests using either browser-based TestNav, installable TestNav or a combination of both. Below is a quick list of differences between the two options.
Browser-based TestNav |

Java dependent

Installable TestNav
DOES NOT run on a browser - As a result, testing is not affected by browser updates

Installable TestNav |

Please do not make any unnecessary technology changes during an online testing administration, including applying software patches. Browser-based TestNav users cannot delay dependency updates, like Java versions that Oracle requires. These updates are beyond Pearson's control; however, we make software updates as soon as possible, if a forced dependency update causes problems with TestNav.
After you set up TestNav, use your assessment management system to:
- Pre-cache test content, after you download and install ProctorCache.
Set backup save locations for student responses.
Obtain logins for your testing session
