Find Log Files on an IPad

You can find SRF and log files two ways on iPads - using Safari or a USB cable.

Using Safari:

  1. Open Safari and enter the url: testnav://admin. 
    Note that the first time you access this, a dialog asks if you want to open in TestNav. Tap Open to open TestNav.
  2. Click View Logs or View Student Responses.
  3. From this screen, you can view and email SRF and log files.
  4. Click the Home button when finished.

Using a USB cable:

  1. Connect the iPad to the computer using a USB cable.
  2. Start iTunes, version 9.1 or later.
  3. Click iPad from the listed devices in the iTunes window.
  4. Click the Apps tab and then scroll down to the bottom of the page. 
  5. View the list of apps currently installed on the iPad under File Sharing.
  6. Select the TestNav App. A list of TestNav log files displays under TestNav Documents.
  7. Select and open the SRF or log file you want to view.

Secondary Save Location (PearsonAccessNext Only)

Pearson strongly recommends that you configure a network drive as a secondary save location to ensure that you do not lose responses, even if a student cannot continue to test on the same computer. 

Set a secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) address as the save location to ensure that the secondary save applies to all testing computers and devices. 

You can place backup SRFs in a directory on the network file server, on the student's testing computer, or on a secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) site.  The following table outlines the pros and cons of each backup save location.

When a student responds to a test question, TestNav sends the response to the Pearson server. If the network experiences a connectivity issue, or the student encounters an error, TestNav saves the response to a saved response file (SRF).

TestNav also creates a log file during the testing session. These files help Pearson troubleshoot issues, if they occur. After connectivity is reestablished, and responses successfully save to the Pearson server, TestNav deletes the SRF.

Workflow for Student Response Files Setup

Before testing, refer to your assessment management system user guide to configure TestNav. Complete the following steps:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the default primary save location.
  2. For both Windows and Mac, configure student accounts to have complete read, write and delete access in all save locations.
  3. Give proctors access to SRF and log files by either of the following:

    • Grant admin rights to proctors on each testing computer.

    • Instruct proctors to access these files while the student is logged in to the testing computer.

  4. Communicate SRF and log file locations /procedures to proctors (see Primary Save Location below). Remind proctors to track which student tests on which device during infrastructure trials and on test days.
  5. PAN users only: Configure the secondary save location through your assessment management system. 
    The same secondary save location applies to all computers and devices. You only need to set this configuration one time.

During BOTH the infrastructure trial and the actual test, note which specific iPad each student uses during each test. The TestNav app saves SRFs to only one designated place on the testing device. If an error occurs, you can locate files only on that specific device.

Default Primary Save Location

On Chrome OS, the SRF default primary save location is not customizable. 

To find files on Chrome OS:

TestNav has a default primary SRF save location for all computers and devices. You cannot configure the log file save location.

Find Log Files on Chrome OS

  1. Launch the TestNav app.
  2. Focus your cursor in the username or password field.
  3. Press <ctrl><shft>z, and the File Viewer box appears.
    If the File Viewer does not display, click on the window and then press <ctrl><shft>z again.
  4. Plug in a USB memory stick.
  5. Click the download button next to the srf and log file(s) you want to download.
  6. When the window opens, select the USB memory stick, and click Save.

Default Primary Save Location

TestNav has a default primary SRF save location for all computers and devices. You cannot configure the log file save location.

Directory on network computer

If you set a network file server as a primary or secondary backup location, do not use:

  • Spaces in the save location path.
  • A location that requires authentication. If authentication is required, TestNav cannot access the shared location.
  • A Windows UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) or network path, such as \\ComputerName\SharedFolder\Resource on a Mac or Linux. Pearson recommends that you specify a mapped drive location, such as D:\TopDirectory\NextDirectory\SaveLocation.
Backup file is accessible from other computers.
  • Uses more internal network bandwidth.
  • Responses save to the network drive more slowly than to the local directory. As a result, test items take more time to load.
  • Does not provide secondary save for the devices below:
    • Android devices
    • Chromebooks
    • iPads
Local directory on testing computer (TestNav client)
  • Uses less internal network bandwidth.
  • Responses save to local directory more quickly than to the network drive. As a result, test items take less time to load.
  • Backup file is not accessible from any other computer.
  • Does not provide secondary save for the devices below:
