Saved Response File (SRF) Backups

TestNav saves SRF files in different locations depending on the operating system and platform, and you should refer to the user guide for your assessment management system to configure TestNav. 

When a student encounters an error, most often you must locate these files to recover student responses. As a result, Pearson strongly recommends that you find (see locations below) and note the SRF and log file location for your systems BEFORE the actual testing session. You also have the option to designate a SECOND save location on Windows and Mac OS X, as noted in the Windows and Mac OS X section below.

If you encounter an error, you should locate and retrieve these files BEFORE you call the Pearson support for assistance.

Default Directory Information

As a default, TestNav creates a Pearson directory in the home directory of the testing computer. SRFs are stored in the main Pearson directory. The TestNav client creates a directory called “logs” in the Pearson folder in the user’s home directory. The TestNav client logs the current system output and error messages for diagnostic purposes.

Windows and Mac OSX

For Windows and Mac OS X computers, the default location for this file is the Pearson folder in the user's home directory; however, you can configure this primary backup location on TestNav releases 8.0.4 and greater.

You can also set multiple locations on these computers.

Secondary Save Location

Pearson strongly recommends that you configure a network drive as a SECONDARY save location to ensure that you can retrieve and upload SRF files, even if a student cannot continue to test on the same computer. 

 Find Your SRF and Log Files on Windows

SRF file location:

Windows 7


Log file location:

Windows 7 and 8


For example: C:\Users\UserA\Pearson\User-A-1234\logs
Windows 7: <root>\Documents and Settings\<username>\Pearson\first name-last name-identifier\logs.

Mac OS X: /Users/<username>/Pearson/first name-last name-identifier/logs. For example: /Users/UserA/Pearson/User-A-1234/logs 

Android, Chromebook, and iPad

The SRF default location varies by operating system and is NOT customizable.

Android, Chromebook, and iPad Limitations

  • iPads, Chromebooks, and Android devices have only one save file location. As a result, Pearson recommends that each student uses the same device to resume a testing session after encountering a problem.
  • Occasionally, Pearson revalidates an SRF and sends it back to a customer for re-upload. You cannot upload an SRF to these devices. You can only upload this file and resume a student's test session on Windows or Mac OS X.
 Find Your SRF and Log Files on Android

On Windows or Linux:

  1. Connect the device to the computer using the micro USB cord that came with the device.
  2. Click Settings,
  3. If you have not already, go to and download the Android File Transfer application.
  4. Follow instructions


 Find Your SRF and Log Files on Chromebook
  1. Launch the TestNav app.
  2. Focus your cursor in the username or password field.
  3. Press <ctrl><shft>z and the File Viewer box appears.
    If the File Viewer does not display, click on the window and then press <ctrl><shft>z again.
  4. Plug in your USB memory stick.
  5. Click the download button next to the log file(s) you wish to download.
  6. When the window opens, select the USB memory stick, and click Save.


 Find Your SRF and Log Files on iPad

You can view SRF and log files two ways on iPads, via Safari or USB.

  1. Open Safari and enter the url: testnav://admin. Note that the first time you access this, a dialog asks if you want to open in TestNav. Tap Open. TestNav opens.
  2. Click View Logs or View Student Responses.
  3. From this screen, you can view and email SRF and log files.
  4. Click the Home button when finished.
  1. Connect the iPad to your computer via USB cable.
  2. Launch iTunes, version 9.1 or later.
  3. Click iPad from the listed devices in the iTunes window.
  4. Click the Apps tab and then scroll down to the bottom of the page. View the list of apps currently installed on the iPad under File Sharing.
  5. Select the TestNav App. A list of TestNav log files displays under TestNav Documents.
  6. Select and open the log file you wish to view.
