A histogram is a visual interpretation of numerical data showing the number of data points falling within a specified range of values. Authors can add a prompt, set the grid coordinates, set frequency axis, bin axis, and add static bars. Students can add responses by clicking on a bar and moving it. This is a machine scored interaction.

See Author Test Items and Choice Interaction for general instructions on item creation.

  1. From the Editor tab, select Add Interaction > Charts & Graphs > Histogram.
  2. Enter a prompt.
  3. In Grid Settings:
    • Optionally modify the Chart Label.
    • Orientation: Choose Horizontal or Vertical.
    • Unchecking Show Origin will remove the label on the Min value (initial line).
  4. Set up Bin Axis.
    • Add a Label.
    • Enter a Name.
    • Bin Width
    • Starting Value
    • Arrowheads: Select to display an arrow at each end of the axis.
    • Bin Label Positions
    • Show Lines
  5. Set up Frequency Axis
    • Visual Increment defaults to 1 but may be adjusted. This defines the increments for visual grid lines.
    • The Snap-to Increment does not have to match the visual increment shown on the chart axis. This setting defines the snap-to positions where points can be placed. Points may be placed between visible grid intervals.
  6. In the Bars section, use the Add Bar (Plus) icon to add additional bars. For each bar: select Static if the student will not adjust, the Start Value and Correct Value (not applicable if static).
  7. Enter Properties. See also Item Properties.
  8. For Scoring Settings, leaving the bin label override blank allows the system to set the bin numbers automatically. Partial scoring is not available for this item type.
  9. Select Preview
  10. Toggle on 'Show Answers' and confirm it works as expected.
  11. Select Save.
