In the Hot Spot interaction, the student responds by selecting one or more locations, or hot spots, on the screen. Some examples:

  • Shading fraction models
  • Completing line plots
  • Selecting points on number lines
  • Selecting total values (coins, base ten blocks, etc.)

You can create multiple choice and multi-select items with "target areas."

To create a hot spot interaction:

  1. From the Editor tab, select Add Interaction, and then select Hot Spot.
  2. Under Configuration, upload an image and set its dimensions.
  3. Use the sliders to adjust the position of each hot spot on the image. There is drag-to-move functionality for easier placement of shapes as well as visual feedback with hover states, grab cursors, and identifier labels displayed on elements.


  4. Under Settings, enter a value for Min and Max Associations.
  5. Under Scoring Settings, enter a value in Max Points. See also: Scoring Types.
    1. Map to Value: This is a flexible scoring method that evaluates responses based on assigned numerical values rather than requiring every possible correct combination to be defined. Values are assigned to individual responses by setting a numerical value (positive, negative, whole number, or decimal) for each hot spot. A response is scored as correct when the sum of the selected values equals the defined total, eliminating the need to manually configure every valid answer combination.
  6. Under Correct Response, select the correct hot spot(s).
  7. Enter Properties. See also Item Properties.
