After you download TestNav and ProctorCache, complete the following:

These ordered steps correspond to sections below or a related setup page. You can click each link to go directly to the corresponding processes.

  1. Install TestNav using the instructions below.
  2. Turn off auto-correct and predictive text.
  3. Set Up ProctorCache on your proctor caching computer(s).
  4. Run App Check on each device.
  5. Start TestNav to verify app opens and that you can start your test.
  6. Review the Find and Set Up Response File Backups section to prepare yourself to find saved response files (SRF) and log files before the testing session. 
  7. Communicate SRF and log file locations and download information to test proctors.
  8. Run an infrastructure trial.

During BOTH the infrastructure trial and the actual test, note which specific iPad each student uses during each test. The TestNav app saves SRFs to only one designated place on the testing device. If an error occurs, you can locate files only on that specific device.

Install TestNav

You can set up TestNav on an iPad for secure testing using one of the following methods:

 Apple Configurator via USB

To enable single app mode on iPad using Apple Configurator, first back up the device to retain any data or applications. Then, turn on Supervised mode for your organization to wipe the device.

You can restore the iPad after testing by placing the iPad in Supervised mode to put data and apps back on the device.

  1. Connect the iPad to a Mac OS X computer using a USB connection.
  2. On the Mac OS X computer, run Apple Configurator.
  3. On the Configurator's Prepare tab, turn on Supervision.
  4. Click the Prepare button at the bottom of the window.
  5. If prompted, enter the appropriate organization information and click Done.
  6. When you are asked to confirm that you want to apply the settings, click Apply.
  7. Wait while the Configurator completes the updates. When complete, click the Supervise tab.
  8. From the Lock to App drop-down menu, select TestNav.
  9. Click Apply at the bottom of the window.

To release a device from the single app mode:

  1. Confirm that the device is connected to the Mac OS X Server. 
  2. From the Lock to App drop-down menu, select None.
  3. Click Apply at the bottom of the window.
 Apple Profile Manager

Administrators can use Mobile Device Manager (MDM) to push a profile to devices to wirelessly turn on/off single app mode.

Profile Manager is Apple's MDM solution for Mac OS X. You can select the TestNav app from the Lock to App menu and push the profile to supervised devices.

 Autonomous Single App Mode

You can also use autonomous single app mode (ASAM) to set up iPad for secure testing. ASAM is the recommended solution for LEAs to manage single app mode because it reduces administrator workload.

The ASAM feature requires BOTH a Supervised iPad (which you enable only from Apple Configurator) and an MDM (either Profile Manager or third-party). With ASAM, TestNav turns Guided Access on and off, as each testing scenario requires.

Administrators do not need to push profiles to devices to turn on/off single app mode. Instead administrators can grant TestNav the ability to turn on single app mode on-demand.

 Guided Access Mode
  1. Rotate the iPad to landscape orientation.
  2. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access.
    • Turn on Guided Access.
    • Set Passcode.
    • Tap Accessibility Shortcut.

Using TestNav with Guided Access

  1. Start the TestNav app.
  2. Triple click the Home button and enter the passcode.
  3. Tap Options.
    • Turn off Sleep/Wake.
    • Turn on Volume Buttons setting.
    • Turn off Motion to lock iPad to landscape mode.
    • Turn on Touch setting.
  4. Tap Start.

Exiting TestNav/Closing Guided Access mode

  1. Triple-click the Home button.
  2. Enter the passcode.
  3. Tap end in the upper left-hand corner.

After you install TestNav, you must also turn off HTTP Proxy for your wireless network.

To turn off HTTP Proxy, complete the following steps:

  1. Tap Settings, and then, tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the arrow to the right of the connected Wi-Fi network.

When using iPads for secure testing, turn off Auto-Correction and Predictive text:

  1. Tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Correction, and slide left to turn off. 
  2. See Predictive on the same screen, and slide left to turn off.

Do not connect iPads to computers during testing.

Run App Check

To run App Check, on each device:

  1. Click or tap the appropriate icon for your test from the home page, if you have not done so already.
  2. Click or tap the user drop-down menu, and select App Check.

  3. On the Confirm App Self Lock message, click or tap Yes to continue.
    1. Passing systems display a green success message at the top-right of the page.

Start TestNav

If you have not already done so,

  1. Start the TestNav app.
  2. Tap the appropriate icon for your test on the home page. If your test was selected before the test session, you see the Sign In page, rather than the home page.  

    1. If you need to select a different test, tap the user drop-down menu at the upper-right of the page, and tap Choose a different customer.

    2. Tap the appropriate icon for your test.

  3. Input your username and password on the Sign In page to begin your test.

Find and Set Up Response File Backups

TestNav has a default primary SRF save location for all computers and devices. Pearson strongly recommends setting a secondary save location for SRFs as a backup. For detailed information on saved response files (SRFs) and log files, see Understand SRFs and Log Files for Installable TestNav .

SFTP configuration is not supported by all assessment management systems. Consult your assessment management system user guide to determine whether the SFTP option is available.

Prior to testing, complete the following steps:
  1. Familiarize yourself with the default primary save location.

  2. Configure the secondary save location through your assessment management system. 
    The same secondary save location applies to all computers and devices. You only need to set this configuration one time.  

  3. Communicate SRF and log file locations/procedures to proctors (see Primary Save Location below).

  4. Note which student tests on which device during infrastructure trials and on test days.

Primary Save Location

On iPads, the SRF default primary save location is not customizable. 

You can find SRF and log files two ways on iPads - using Safari or a USB cable.
  1. Open Safari and enter the url: testnav://admin
    Note that the first time you access this, a dialog asks if you want to open in TestNav. Tap Open to open TestNav.
  2. Click View Logs or View Student Responses.
  3. From this screen, you can view and email SRF and log files.
  4. Click the Home button when finished.
  1. Connect the iPad to the computer using a USB cable.
  2. Start iTunes, version 9.1 or later.
  3. Click iPad from the listed devices in the iTunes window.
  4. Click the Apps tab and then scroll down to the bottom of the page. 
  5. View the list of apps currently installed on the iPad under File Sharing.
  6. Select the TestNav App. A list of TestNav log files displays under TestNav Documents.
  7. Select and open the SRF or log file you want to view.

Run an Infrastructure Trial

Pearson strongly recommends running an infrastructure trial to verify the technology setup is complete and to familiarize teachers and students with the test. 

Use your training site through your assessment management system to complete the trial before the actual test day.
