The Match interaction allows students to drag image and/or text choices into labeled boxes called gaps. To create a Match item, click Create Item and then the Elements tab. Under Response Interactions, click on the plus sign next to the label ‘Match’ in the left panel.

Prompt

The first section of the Match Edit interface is for a prompt. This subpart begins closed because it is optional, and most item creators tend to create their stem or prompt using the text module, which has additional features.

Gaps

Gaps are labeled boxes where draggable choices can be placed by the student. Two gaps are added by default, but more gaps can be added using the Add Gap plus sign (+). Gaps can be deleted by clicking on the trash can icon. An item must have a minimum of 1 gap.

Match Group is used to restrict the placement of choices. Only choices that share the same match group value as the gap can be placed in that gap. For example, if the match group was “red”, red choices could only be placed on red gaps, not blue gaps. Choices and gaps are only allowed one match group each. Gaps with no match groups only accept choices with no match groups. Only letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores can be used. As you type in a Match Group in this section, it will be added to the drop-down menu found for Match Group under Choices.

The Max choices allowed in gap field allows you to specify the maximum number of choices that can be placed in the gap. Checking the Unlimited box allows the student to place all of the choices in the same gap.

Choices

In this subsection, you create the choices the student can drag to the gaps. The Choices may be images or text. The Match module has a default of four text choices. Click the drop-down next to Add Choice if you wish to insert Art as a choice. Click the trash can to remove a choice.

The Restrict match by group is used to restrict the placement of choices. As described above, only choices that share the same match group value as the gap can be placed on that gap. Choices are only allowed one match group each. Note that if you have more than one gap with the same Match Group, that Match Group name will appear multiple times in the drop-down menu. It does not matter which instance of that Match Group you choose from the drop-down menu.

Starting groups consist of labeled boxes where the draggable choices will start and return to (in their original order) if removed from a gap. Starting groups are optional.

The Max uses field allows you to specify the limit of times a choice can be used. Checking the Unlimited box allows the student to create an unlimited number of copies of that choice.

To add Art to a Choice, use the Browse button to navigate to the location of the art file. Supported media types include: gif, png, jpg, svg, and svgz. Preview mode will display the art. You may also use the TN8 Preview button to see a representation of the item.

In order for the TestNav 8 Preview to function, you may wish to upload concept or placeholder art if the final art has not been created. For more detailed specifications, you can upload an attachment and use the comment field to reference that attachment. Use the appropriate art status to indicate that this is not the final art.

For any art in any item interaction or stimulus, if you are using the .svgz file format, use Chrome and not Firefox to upload your images, since Firefox has a longstanding defect in regards to local handling of the .svgz format. In Chrome, you may need to save the item, exit the item, and return before you see the images rendered in Preview mode.

Correct Response(s)

The choices entered will display in the “--Select correct answer choice--” drop-down for you to select the correct answer(s). If more than one choice should be placed in the same gap for a correct response, click the plus sign next to each gap to include additional choices that are correct for that gap.
